Mark Richards at Haleiwa, Hawaii – 1976

In 1976, on the North Shore of Oahu, Mark Richards was regarded by many as the stand-out surfer of the winter. He liked the break at Haleiwa – ‘it’s big, always coming at you, but you can hot-dog it’. He also liked it because it was predominantly a ‘local’ place, and unlike some of the Australians that year, he got along with the Hawaiians.
